Dear Campus Community

We cordially invite you to attend UC Merced’s inaugural Equity Advancing Showcase on Education (EASE) which will take place on Wednesday, May 19 from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. EASE was developed by the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in collaboration with the Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning as the culminating event of a year-long multi-disciplinary learning community that has focused on collaborative discussions about anti-racist pedagogy and how this is distinct from anti-racist teaching. For the purposes of this showcase, anti-racist teaching refers to course content that explicitly supports instruction on the history and continuation of racism as it intersects with White dominance and privilege. Anti-racist pedagogy refers to teaching methods employed by instructors that disrupt the traditional pedagogical practices that reinforce structural racism.

The series of virtual sessions that make up EASE will cover a variety of topics associated with successfully supporting equity, diversity and inclusion in the classroom and other learning spaces (e.g., decolonizing pedagogy and effective teaching strategies that facilitate transformative learning for our diverse student population). EASE will also elevate student voices regarding their experiences and highlight how ideally anti-racist teaching and anti-racist pedagogy work in tandem; however, any course, regardless of subject/content, can and should employ anti-racist pedagogy.

To register or for more information, please visit our EASE website. We hope to see you on May 19! If you have any questions, please email Eileen Camfield (ecamfield@ucmerced.edu) or Onar Primitivo (oprimitivo@ucmerced.edu).

Best,

The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
